A Wild Life with Justin Meneguzzi

Life has a funny way of panning out. I was coming towards the end of my final year studying a Law Masters in Melbourne when out of the blue I won $10,000 in travel vouchers from a 25-words-or-less-style competition run by Lonely Planet. Fast forward after a year of travel

SIZE | To think that a baby gorilla, so tiny with SIZE | To think that a baby gorilla, so tiny with curly hair, can grow into a massive male silverback is mindblowing. This photo I captured on my recent gorilla trek in Rwanda shows that size difference. An average silverback gorilla can weigh up to 180kg and measure 170cm.

Gorillas are classed as infants until they reach around three-and-a-half years old, and adults from around 8 years. Males between 8-12 years are called 'blackbacks'. Then from 12 years old, they develop a silver section of hair over their back and hips, earning them the name 'silverback'.

YAWN | Why do hippos yawn you ask? It is a warning YAWN | Why do hippos yawn you ask? It is a warning sign. Hippos yawn to display their jaws and long, sharp teeth. When the hippo feels threatened, it spreads its jaws wide and adopts an aggressive posture, attacking anything who enters its area or gets too close to its young. Luckily I am with the experienced guides at Magashi Camp so they know how to read the animal's behaviour and keep a safe distance for not only us, but what the animal feels comfortable with.

MAGICAL | Magashi Camp is a Wilderness Safaris pro MAGICAL | Magashi Camp is a Wilderness Safaris property situated in the phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga. It was my second visit to the camp and I was delighted to see the wildlife is thriving in the area. African Parks have been doing an incredible job at managing Akagera National Park and every time I return, I am seeing more and more wildlife. To really experience Akagera NP, you have to stay at Magashi Camp. They have exclusive access to areas where day visitors to the park are restricted. The staff and service go above and beyond and the luxury tents take glamping to the next level.

WORLD GORILLA DAY 🦍🦍⁣ ⁣ Nothing will eve WORLD GORILLA DAY 🦍🦍⁣

Nothing will ever prepare you for the emotions you feel when spending time around these rare mountain gorillas. It is heartbreaking to think that these gorillas were once on the edge of extinction and could have been lost forever. There are just over 1000 mountain gorillas in the wild (counted at last census). They are slowly coming back, thanks to dedicated hard work and conservation efforts. Let's keep the pressure on to ensure these special animals continue to thrive.

These Colobus monkeys are one of 12 primate species found in Rwanda's Nyungwe National Park. Nyungwe is one of Africa's oldest rainforests and is rich in biodiversity. I always enjoy visiting this region in Rwanda as their is a special magic in the air and the energy from this ancient rainforest is strong.

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge that this land on which we live and roam is that of its Traditional Owners; we pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. We are aware that the land is never truly being explored anew, given the ancient cultures that came before us who still call this land their home.
