‘Too Close for Comfort’ white paper promoting responsible wildlife tourism in Africa

The African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA®) has released a new white paper, Too Close for Comfort: Rethinking Human–Wildlife Boundaries for a Sustainable African Future, providing practical tools and frameworks to help operators, advisors and partners deliver ethical, safe and sustainable wildlife encounters across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

Setting new standards for wildlife tourism

With global demand for wildlife experiences rising, ATTA®’s research highlights the growing challenge of travellers and operators encroaching too closely on animals in the wild. This behaviour risks animal welfare, guest safety and the integrity of Africa’s tourism reputation. The new white paper positions African operators to lead by example, offering actionable solutions for maintaining respectful wildlife boundaries.

ATTA® Chief Executive Officer Kgomotso Ramothea said the white paper responds directly to calls from members for practical tools that can be implemented on the ground by guides and operators. The report’s aim is to turn awareness into tangible action, equipping the industry to deliver meaningful wildlife encounters that respect both animals and communities.

A framework for ethical encounters

Drawing on the expertise of leading ATTA® members including EcoTraining, Great Plains Conservation, Marine Dynamics and Pangolin.Africa, the white paper introduces a “4D Framework” for responsible wildlife interactions — focusing on distance, duration, density and directional freedom. It also provides adaptable operational tools such as guest briefing templates, species micro-briefs, digital sightings logs and geofenced alerts.

Additional features include a self-assessment diagnostic for businesses, sustainability pledges for operators and advisors, and case studies highlighting best practices from across the continent.

For the wider industry

The white paper is a valuable resource for lodges, DMCs, guides, marine operators, travel advisors, park authorities, and media professionals committed to promoting responsible and sustainable tourism.
