The Great Barrier Reef is once again set to dazzle with its annual coral spawning event this weekend, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the Reef Cooperative — a pioneering alliance driving collaboration between tourism, science, Traditional Owners and industry to protect the world’s largest reef system.
A natural wonder in motion
Often described as one of nature’s greatest spectacles, the coral spawning sees trillions of coral eggs and sperm released in perfect synchrony following the November full moon. This extraordinary event symbolises the Reef’s regenerative power and serves as a key indicator of its overall health.
At the Reef Magic Pontoon off Cairns, members of the Reef Cooperative — including GBR Biology, Citizens of the Reef, Mars Sustainable Solutions, and Yirrganydji and Gunggandji Traditional Owners — will gather to observe and record the event while conducting vital restoration activities.
Science, culture and tourism unite
During the spawning, teams will collect data for the Great Reef Census, install Mars Reef Stars, and assist in coral larval reseeding to help regenerate damaged coral habitats. The collaboration highlights the growing connection between marine science and tourism, blending local Indigenous knowledge with research and visitor participation to protect the Reef’s future.
Visitors invited to take part
Travellers can also contribute to reef conservation through several hands-on initiatives, including joining the Great Reef Census to capture or analyse underwater imagery, participating in Reef Recovery Days with marine biologists and cultural guides, or using the Eye on the Reef app to help monitor coral health.
This year’s coral spawning not only celebrates the Reef’s resilience but also showcases the success of cooperative conservation — proving that meaningful impact can be achieved when science, community and tourism work together.
