There are destinations you visit — and then there are places that test you.
Mammoth Lakes in California’s Eastern Sierra is firmly in the latter category, where altitude, terrain and raw natural beauty combine to create one of North America’s most compelling hubs for endurance sport.
Built for the long haul

Set high in the mountains, Mammoth Lakes has quietly become a magnet for elite athletes and ambitious adventurers.
The draw is simple: thin air, big climbs and landscapes that demand effort. It’s the kind of place where training becomes transformation — and where even casual travellers are tempted to push a little further.
Ride, run, repeat

Come September, the region’s event calendar shifts into high gear.
The Mammoth Gran Fondo (12 September) offers cyclists a choice of three routes, stretching up to 164 kilometres through the rugged beauty of the Eastern Sierra. Long climbs, sweeping descents and high-altitude riding define the experience.
A week later, Mammoth Tuff (18–20 September) brings the world’s best gravel riders to town as part of the UCI Gravel World Series. It’s fast, technical and set against a backdrop of alpine wilderness.
Trails that tell a story
For runners, Mammoth Trailfest (24–27 September) is where community meets competition.
Founded by trail running legend Tim Tollefson, the festival blends world-class racing with storytelling, live events and a shared respect for the trails themselves. It’s as much about connection as it is about performance.
Then comes the ultimate test.
The challenge that changes everything

Simply known as The Mammoth, this 344-kilometre endurance event pushes runners to their limits across five days in October.
The route circles an ancient volcanic caldera, winding through pine forests, past the surreal formations of Mono Lake and over Mammoth Mountain itself. It’s relentless, raw and unforgettable.
And that’s exactly the point.
More than a finish line

What makes Mammoth Lakes stand out isn’t just the events — it’s the environment.
This is a place where endurance sport is shaped by the land itself. Where every climb reveals a new perspective, and every kilometre feels earned.
You don’t just come here to compete.
You come here to see what you’re capable of.
