Los Cabos leads Mexico’s responsible tourism movement

Los Cabos is redefining what it means to travel with purpose, positioning itself at the forefront of Mexico’s sustainable tourism evolution. As global visitation continues to rise, the Baja California Sur destination is taking bold steps to ensure growth is balanced with protection of its natural environment, cultural heritage, and community wellbeing.

A model for conscious and regenerative tourism

With international arrivals to Mexico up 15 per cent year-on-year, the Los Cabos Tourism Board (FITURCA) has made sustainability the cornerstone of its development strategy. Guided by the principles of UN Tourism’s One Planet vision, Los Cabos aims to establish a regenerative model that restores ecosystems, uplifts local communities, and preserves its unique landscapes for future generations.

Travellers are increasingly seeking authentic and eco-conscious experiences, with recent studies showing that seven in ten now actively prioritise sustainable travel. Los Cabos has responded by uniting local businesses, resorts, and organisations to champion meaningful environmental and social change.

Leading by example

Across the destination, hotels, resorts, and tourism partners are embracing sustainability in action:

  • Royal Solaris Los Cabos and GR Solaris Lighthouse have phased out single-use plastics, introduced water-saving programs, and are working towards Green Key certification.
  • The Villa Group supports community clean-ups, local charities, and employee education initiatives.
  • Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos operates sea turtle conservation programs and donates food to animal shelters and social care organisations.
  • Hotel San Cristóbal’s Cosecha restaurant sources nearly half of its produce on-site and directly from local fishermen.
  • ACRE Resort practices regenerative farming and low-water landscaping through its agroecological garden.
  • Solmar Hotels & Resorts and Grand Velas Los Cabos have invested in desalination, water treatment, and solar technology to reduce environmental impact.
  • Grupo Pueblo Bonito and the Letty Coppel Foundation run holistic social programs promoting health, education, and cultural preservation.
  • Mexico Giveaways contributes to SHINE, empowering women through craft and life-skills training.
  • Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate promotes energy-efficient, sustainable homes.
  • One&Only Palmilla supports turtle protection and community reintegration programs for women artisans.

A shared vision for the future

According to FITURCA Managing Director Rodrigo Esponda, Los Cabos’ goal is to strengthen tourism that “repairs, amplifies positive impact, and takes shared responsibility” for both the environment and economy. By aligning with the One Planet framework, the region is demonstrating how luxury travel and sustainability can coexist.

Los Cabos’ collaborative approach — spanning conservation, community partnerships, and responsible hospitality — sets a benchmark for destinations worldwide seeking to combine prosperity with preservation.
