Astrotourism is capturing Aussie imaginations in a big way – and the best part? You’re only a three-hour flight across the Tasman from some of the world’s most spellbinding stargazing.
This winter marks 20 years of the Dark Sky Project in Takapō (Tekapo), where visitors gather under some of the clearest skies on Earth. Perched 1,029 metres above sea level atop Mount John, stargazers get hands-on with high-powered telescopes while learning Ngāi Tahu Māori star lore and celestial navigation. It’s a perfect blend of science, storytelling and connection.
Ngāi Tahu Tourism is very proud to be associated with the pioneers of astrotourism. I’m excited that twenty years on, we’re still sharing their love of the night sky along with mātauranga Māori and our traditional Ngāi Tahu stories about whetū (stars), said Victoria Campbell, general manager and Ngāi Tahu astronomer.
It’s an immersive journey through culture and cosmos – and it’s no small feat that the Dark Sky Project attracts over 45,000 visitors a year.

Astrotourism doesn’t stop at stargazing decks. New Zealand’s boutique eco-retreats are taking it up a notch:
- The Headwaters Eco Lodge in Glenorchy has recently launched a hosted stargazing experience within the Tāhuna Glenorchy Dark Sky Sanctuary – one of only 23 global sanctuaries. Guests enjoy a chef-prepared dinner, crystal-clear telescopic views and steaming hot chocolate, all beneath the celestial dome.
- Coming in spring 2026, the Fiordland Eco Retreat near Lake Te Anau promises an ultra-luxurious, adults-only escape with outdoor baths, stargazing windows and astronomy sessions led by an official Dark Sky Ambassador.
