Experience Bushwalking the Cooloola Great Walk

If you’re looking for a breathtaking multi-day hiking experience in Queensland, the Cooloola Great Walk is an adventure like no other. Spanning over 100km through the Great Sandy National Park, this trail takes hikers across incredibly diverse landscapes, from towering sand dunes to lush rainforests, ocean shores and river banks, offering some of the most spectacular coastal views in Australia. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a first-time adventurer, this hike will take you through Southeast Queensland‘s unique landscapes for a journey you won’t forget.

Trail Highlights

  • Carlo Sandblow – Walk across this impressive sand dune, offering panoramic views over Rainbow Beach and the ocean.
  • Noosa Everglades– One of only two everglade systems in the world, a truly unique ecosystem teeming with birdlife.
  • Diverse Landscapes – Hike through rainforests, coastal woodlands, and heath plains, each offering a distinct experience every day.
  • Remote Wilderness – Immerse yourself in the peaceful solitude of nature, far from civilisation for a real stress detox.

Track Information

  • Distance: 102 km (one-way)
  • Duration: 5 days (recommended)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (multi-day hike with elevation changes and varying terrain)
  • Best for: Experienced hikers or those with good fitness levels
  • Camping: Designated walkers’ campsites along the trail
  • Facilities: Toilet (no flush) and rainwater tanks available at walker’s campsites and day-use area (needs treating before use)
  • Access Points: Depending on whether you plan on starting the hike from the southern or the northern end, there are two access points to the Cooloola Great Walk: the southern entrance on Noosa North Shore via Tewantin, and the northern entrance from Carlo Sand Blow car park at Rainbow Beach. Bus and taxi services are available from both ends.

When to Go

The best time to hike the Cooloola Great Walk is during the cooler months, from April to September, when temperatures are more comfortable and there is less humidity. Much of the trail offers little shade, requiring trekkers to hike long distances under Queensland’s intense sun. Avoid the wet season (summer months) as heavy rains can make some sections difficult to traverse.
