Adventure travellers now have a new way to experience Tanzania’s iconic Serengeti ecosystem with the launch of a dedicated mountain biking and e-biking route. Operated by Leonotis Adventures through Lake Natron Camp, the new “Ride the Serengeti” experience offers an active, low-impact alternative to traditional safaris.
The five-day, four-night guided journey takes small groups on a point-to-point trail that travels through buffer zones of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, outside the national park’s official boundaries.
Scenic cycling across remote landscapes
Starting in the Klein’s Camp area in the north – including Klein’s, Lobo, Kogatende and Lamai – the route heads south through regions like Olduvai, Ndutu and the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Riders traverse communal lands with access to privately managed wilderness zones that are typically closed to general tourism traffic.
Camp overnights are set at remote and exclusive sites, with the proceeds from camping fees directed to community development projects. This approach supports conservation efforts and provides meaningful engagement with local communities.
A sustainable and immersive safari option
“Ride the Serengeti” is designed for those seeking a more immersive and physically engaging safari. The itinerary minimises reliance on internal flights and game vehicles, aligning with growing demand for more sustainable and meaningful travel options.
For those looking to extend their adventure, a hiking add-on is available through the “Footsteps of Mankind” route, providing a deeper dive into the region’s rich cultural and natural history.
