Tangaroa Blue Foundation WA Beach Clean-Up

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is calling on citizen scientists, schools, community groups, corporate groups, families and all ocean lovers to register for the 2021 WA Beach Clean-Up event from 15-18th October.

The community can participate by organising a clean-up at their favourite section of the Western Australian coastline and register their chosen site by visiting https://www.tangaroablue.org/wa-beach-clean-up-2021-launched/. Clean-ups can also extend to estuaries and inland rivers, streams and other waterways. 

Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s Western Australia Coordinator, Casey Woodward, says marine debris is an international problem, but Australians taking action in their local area will lessen the impacts and help to create change. 

“Every piece of rubbish removed from the beach means less opportunity for marine animals to be impacted through ingestion or entanglement. The data that is collected also assists us to track litter to its source and create programs to change behaviour and stop rubbish at the source. We are incredibly lucky to call the coastline of Western Australia our home. Alongside our long term partners Keep Australia Beautiful WA, we are welcoming Tallwood Custom Built Homes and Bay West Blinds to our corporate support for this year’s event.”

“We’re seeking volunteers from all walks of life to get involved and help remove marine debris from the coast, to collect data on what is being found and to submit it to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database. We can then start to work on solutions to stop the flow of litter at the source. It costs nothing to participate and all materials, volunteer insurance and logistical support is provided.”

Get involved

In 2020, more than 1200 people from across the community spent over 2780 volunteer hours at 107 clean-up events and scoured more than 184 km of coastline. A total of 76,480 items, weighing in at 3.2 tonne, were removed and audited by volunteers.
