East Arnhem Land Adventures – Lirrwi Tourism

Indigenous Lirrwi Tourism is offering two new full-day adventures in East Arnhem Land in 2019.

This is the perfect chance for visitors to the Northern Territory to be introduced to the Yolngu people, their homelands and their culture in one unforgettable day.

Ideal for people working in region, or for those calling through Nhulunbuy (Gove) on holidays, Lirrwi’s day tours have been developed by Yolngu people to offer visitors an incredible cultural adventure in the community’s remote homelands and surrounding regions.  

The day tours operate from Nhulunbuy and include:

Gove Gululu Day Tour

Gululu means “Welcome to our Country” and this full-day tour is a welcome to Yolngu Country. Yolngu are the traditional owners of Miwatj region across both sea and land. Visitors learn about Yolngu culture, spend time sitting and walking together with a local Yolngu guide who shares their knowledge.

The Gululu Tour is a full day tour, where visitors are introduced to places of cultural significance including Daliwoi Bay, Maccassans Beach, beautiful Turtle Beach, and Little Bondi.

The $330 per person fare includes morning tea, lunch, Buku-Larrnggay Mulka (Arts) Centre* activities, all permits and the company of a Yolngu tour guide.

Bawaka Homeland Highlights Tour

A full-day, four-wheel drive tour takes visitors to beautiful Bawaka Homeland, located 90 minutes south of Yirrkala. Bawaka is a much-loved family getaway for Yolngu, set on a pristine, white-sanded beach fringed with coconut palms and with turquoise water lapping at the shore.

A Lirrwi Yolngu guide introduces guests to Bawaka, the significance of the area and explain the seven Yolngu seasons. The guide demonstrates how various plants and trees are used for art, to create Yidaki (didgeridoo), bush medicine, foods and more. If the tides are right this tour might include spear fishing or hunting for mud crabs. Visitors learn about Moiety – Yirratja (language) and Dhuwa (kinship) and how it connects Yolngu to each other and to the land.

The Bawaka Tour is a real cultural immersion, offering visitors a connection with Yolngu lifestyle and Yolngu country and an insight into Yolngu traditional way of life. There are lots of opportunities to ask questions.

Fares on the tour are $489 per person and include morning tea, lunch, all permits and the company of a Yolngu tour guide.

Other Multi-Day Itineraries
