Conservation key at Rwanda’s Wilderness Bisate

Tucked within the heart of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Bisate Lodge stands as a beacon of eco-friendly luxury. This Wilderness property not only immerses you in the wonders of nature but also champions sustainability and conservation.

Spanning a 160sq km area in the northern part of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is part of the great Virunga Volcano Conservation region spanning to cover Virunga National Park Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. It was initially a small area around Karisimbi, Mikeno and Visoke volcanoes which was gazetted to protect the Mountain gorillas which were facing the threat of extinction as a result of poaching.

One of the most inspiring facets of Bisate Lodge is its unwavering commitment to sustainability and conservation. As part of Wilderness Destinations, the lodge embraces a holistic approach that extends far beyond its walls. From waste management to community engagement, every aspect of the lodge’s operations is rooted in a deep respect for the environment and the local communities.

Wilderness envisions a world where luxury and responsible travel seamlessly coexist. Their 4Cs ethos – Commerce, Conservation, Community, and Culture – serves as a guiding light, ensuring that every journey leaves a positive impact on the planet and its people.

Unfenced. Untamed. Unrepeatable. Whether seeing gorillas forage in the Rwandan rainforest or the perspective you gain from an informative village visit, every minute of your stay at Bisate will remind you of our shared purpose in preserving and expanding these iconic wild lands. A model of conservation tourism, our reforestation project invites you to join the Wilderness team by planting a tree.

Wilderness Bisate celebrates its commitment to the lodge’s reforestation project with a record number of 70 000 indigenous trees planted, and now independent of their care, creating new swathes of habitat. All the trees were nurtured from seed to sapling in the onsite nursery. This visionary programme exemplifies Wilderness’ objective to double the amount of land under its protection by 2030.

Experiences: A tapestry of adventure and connection

Bisate Lodge offers a range of unforgettable experiences that immerse you in the very heart of Rwanda’s natural and cultural tapestry. Embark on an awe-inspiring gorilla trekking adventure, coming face to face with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Delve deeper into the wilderness with a Golden Monkeys trekking experience, exploring a world where playful primates enchant your senses.

For those seeking cultural encounters, the lodge offers village visits and community experiences at Red Rocks Cultural Centre, providing a unique insight into local life. And if you’re driven by a desire to give back, Bisate Lodge’s tree-planting initiative allows you to leave a lasting legacy in the form of a thriving forest.
