Alone Australia’s Suzan Muir leads women into Flinders Island’s wilderness

Suzan Muir survived 63 days alone in the wilderness on Alone Australia, longer than half the field lasted in fewer than 10. Now she is bringing a small group of women into a different kind of wild, one built around conversation and stillness rather than survival, on the granite mountains and remote beaches of Tasmania’s Flinders Island.

Muir will host Women, Wild & Wise with Tasmanian Expeditions from 7 to 12 March 2027, a six-day journey combining wilderness walking with workshops and unhurried conversation. It draws on Muir’s decades of off-grid living and guiding, and on the resilience and self-trust she describes discovering through extended time in remote places.

A guide shaped by extremes

Muir became known to an international audience as runner-up on Season 2 of Alone Australia, enduring hunger, illness and freezing conditions across 63 days of solo wilderness survival. That experience sits on top of years spent living off-grid in Victoria’s remote Grampians with her husband, adventurer Jon Muir OAM, who has summited Everest, reached both Poles and crossed Australia on foot. Together, the couple has spent years guiding others toward the practical skills and confidence needed to spend meaningful time in nature.

For Muir, there is something specific about doing this work with women. ‘There is something very powerful about women spending time together in the wild,’ she said. ‘When we step away from the noise and demands of everyday life, we create space to listen, to notice what is around us and to learn from each other. Intentional contemplation within nature deepens our sense of belonging, safety and awe.’

From the Larapinta Trail to Flinders Island

This is not Muir’s first hosted wilderness experience. A previous journey along the Larapinta Trail left a strong impression on participants, with one describing it as ‘incredibly special and profound.’ Flinders Island offers a different setting for the same idea, its granite peaks, sweeping beaches and remote coastline built for walking, reflection and conversation rather than covering distance.

The itinerary is based on Tasmanian Expeditions’ existing Flinders Island in Comfort program, adapted specifically to make room for Muir’s workshops and discussions. Walking distances and activity time have been scaled back, shifting the journey toward a slower, centre-based structure where conversation can unfold across the full six days rather than being squeezed between hikes.

Confidence built through stillness, not kilometres

Rather than measuring the trip in distance covered, Muir will draw on her own experience to explore what a sustained relationship with nature can offer: how it builds self-trust and resilience, and how gratitude tends to surface when the usual distractions are stripped away. It is a markedly different pitch to standard wilderness travel, less about physical achievement and more about what unstructured time in wild places can teach.

The six-day Women, Wild & Wise: Tasmania’s Flinders Island with Suzan Muir departs 7 March 2027, priced at AUD $4,990 per person twin share. Solo travellers can request single-use tents at no additional cost, subject to availability.
